Corporate Volunteering a Big Success

In between serving Silver Chain clients morning tea and washing the dishes, City volunteers organised the cottage storeroom, painted walls, pressure cleaned tiles, weeded gardens and planted new plants. 

Helping elderly residents at the Silver Chain’s Rockingham Respite Cottage was the latest action in the City’s Corporate Volunteering Program, which is an initiative from the City’s Volunteering Strategy 2016–2022.

City of Rockingham Chief Executive Officer Michael Parker said corporate volunteering had an important role to play in fostering strong and connected communities.

"As a City we were delighted to be able to assist the seniors at Silver Chain’s Rockingham Respite Cottage and make the facility more dementia friendly," Mr Parker said.

“Corporate volunteering gives not–for-profit organisations like Silver Chain the chance to boost their operations, and more importantly, focus their attention on their clients. City employees who were involved in the program also have the satisfaction of helping others while building relationships with members of staff with whom they don’t usually work."

In December 2017 the Salvation Army Rockingham were the first to benefit from the City’s Corporate Volunteering Program when City staff helped relocate an Op Shop.

In May 2018 City employees also spent a day volunteering at the Rockingham Community Garden in Hillman and at Naragebup Environmental Centre.

"We are fortunate to have a strong spirit of volunteering at the City of Rockingham and look forward to rolling out our Corporate Volunteering Program at many other not-for-profit organisations in the future," Mr Parker said.
