City hailed as leader in environmental sustainability

The City of Bayswater has won the Award for Environmental Leadership and Sustainability at the 2018 LG Honour Awards for its Bayswater Brook Catchment Management Project.

The goal of the Bayswater Brook Catchment Management Project is to move the City of Bayswater towards being a water-sensitive City, delivering sustainable projects with multi-benefit outcomes.  The major achievements of the project have been the rehabilitation of Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary; the Russell Street Park living stream project; and now the revitalisation of a drainage site at Jakobson Way in Morley. A further three drainage sites suitable for living streams have been identified for the next stage of the Bayswater Brook Catchment Management Project. City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the results of the Bayswater Brook Catchment Management Project have been impressive.

"The City has brought together various water management agencies to achieve a common goal: to improve the quality of water flowing into the Swan River. The project has already seen improvements to water quality, increased biodiversity and great outcomes for the community in terms of public space and amenity.

"After the success of the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary revitalisation, the City has begun work on the next stage of the Bayswater Brook Catchment Management Project – the conversion of drainage sites into living streams.

"Designed to mimic natural wetlands, these living streams not only provide habitat for birds, frogs, and other wildlife, but have actually been known to increase the value of surrounding properties in the neighbourhood."

The Bayswater Brook Catchment Management Project has brought various water management agencies together to deliver positive outcomes for the community and the environment, including the City of Bayswater, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Perth Region Natural Resource Management (Perth NRM), Water Corporation, Department of Water, and CSIRO.
