Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary wins again

The City of Bayswater has been recognised on the international stage for its Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary rehabilitation project, proudly winning the award for 'Best Scoping/Operation of a Site Investigation' 2018 Australasian Land and Groundwater Association (ALGA) Awards.

Jointly funded by the City of Bayswater and the Western Australian State Government, the project saw a wetland of limited ecological value transformed into a public space with increased biodiversity, a sustainable bird habitat and improved water quality.

City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said he was proud to see the project receive the recognition it deserves.

"The successful revitalisation of the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary demonstrates the City's commitment to our natural environment and to providing quality public space for our community.

"City staff, Councillors, community groups and representatives from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions worked tirelessly to restore the wetland and we are immensely proud of what has now become a multi-award winning environmental project.

"The ambitious rehabilitation project has resulted in a healthy wetland with increased wildlife diversity and has improved the water quality of the Swan and Canning River system. It has created a beautiful area of open space that will continue to be enjoyed by the community for many years to come."

The ALGA awards recognise excellence in the protection, restoration and management of land and groundwater for the benefit of human health and the broader environment across Australasia.

This represents the fourth significant award presented to the City for the restoration of the wetland area. It follows its announcement as joint winner of the 2017 WA Land Management Award of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Awards (with project consultants GHD); joint winner of the 2016 Premier's Award for Excellence (in the environmental category) and winner of the 2016 Australian Engineering Excellence Award (also in conjunction with GHD).
