The City of Ballarat has this morning welcomed an announcement by the state government that it will commit $10 million to restoration works at Her Majesty’s Theatre if re-elected later this month.
Mayor Councillor Samantha McIntosh said the announcement was an important one.
“Council continues to work hard to secure the future of this very special part of Ballarat’s creative scene,” Mayor McIntosh said.
“We want to see Her Majesty’s Theatre thrive for another 140 years and we simply cannot do it without the help of all levels of government.
“Council has already committed $5.3 million of its own 2018/19 budget to the works and this announcement is a welcome addition. It would go a long way towards allowing us to get the necessary works done as soon as possible so that we can reopen the doors of this historic gem to our community, and to those around the country and the world who love her just as much as we do.”
Mayor McIntosh said the City of Ballarat was also in the final stages of a grant application for federal funding for Her Majesty’s Theatre.
“We’re about to submit an application for funding from the federal government as well. We will continue to work with all sides and levels of government to ensure a magnificent future for this beautiful theatre.”
