You’re invited to celebrate your library Saturday 10 November

The community is invited to learn more about public libraries and celebrate this essential service at the launch of the Libraries Change Lives initiative at Bairnsdale Library on Tuesday, November 13 from 4.30 pm.

The campaign aims to help Victorians understand what libraries offer and the services they provide in their local communities.

East Gippsland Shire Council operates six libraries and three mobile libraries.

Mayor Cr Natalie O’Connell said libraries deliver important services, which Libraries Change Lives hoped to highlight.

“Libraries offer many free services and programs. No other institution offers the same safe and inclusive public spaces with free and equal access to education, social engagement, art and ideas,” Cr O’Connell said.

“In the 2017-18 financial year, almost 15,000 people participated in East Gippsland library programs such as Storytime, Tech Savvy Seniors, film screenings, literacy group, author talks and school holiday activities.

“In the same period, library activity increased by almost 3000 to 365,301. This includes items borrowed such as books and e-resources,” Cr O’Connell said.

One of the services libraries offer is free computer access and wifi, allowing people without home internet to stay connected and complete tasks such as school work and job applications. Victorian libraries provided four million free wifi sessions last year, double the previous year.

Libraries have evolved beyond the traditional role of housing collections and now offer vital community services including support for digital, early years and financial literacy programs.

“New economic modelling demonstrates that every dollar invested in public libraries generates $4.30 of benefits. Libraries are facing increased demand for expanded programs and access to online services. The Libraries Change Lives initiative demonstrates public libraries are a must-have community service,” Cr O’Connell said.

Community members can show their support for libraries by attending the campaign launch or visiting the Libraries Change Lives website.

There are 272 public libraries in Victoria. About a third of Victorians are library members.
