Council’s commitment to improving infrastructure, accessibility and quality of early childhood services will progress with the construction of a new, integrated children’s centre in Bayside’s south. The purpose-built centre, located near the corner of Fern Street and Bluff Road, Black Rock, will offer kindergarten, sessional child care, playgroups, a toy library, maternal and child health and family support services.
The Victorian Government has confirmed that it will contribute $1.6 million towards the $5 million cost of the project.
Neighbouring residents will be invited to participate in the external design of the site and related infrastructure, including traffic movements, parking and landscaping, in the new year.
The former Janet Mundy kindergarten has already been demolished and the Scout Hall and vacant, former Guide Hall will be demolished as soon as possible to avoid vandalism and antisocial behaviour at the vacant site. Construction is expected to start in the second half of next year and the centre is expected to become operational in 2021.
Council will find the Sandringham Lions Club, who have been subleasing the hall from the Scouts, alternative accommodation for their monthly meetings and is working with the club to understand their storage needs.
