Councillor Column - Recycling rules have changed

We all want to do the right thing when it comes to recycling, but with recent changes to recycling standards overseas, working out what should and shouldn't be placed in your yellow-top bin can be quite confusing.

To coincide with National Recycling Week, the City has released an updated Recycling Guide, which clearly outlines what should be placed in your yellow-top bin. You can collect a Guide at the City's Civic Centre, the Libraries and The RISE, or alternatively download a copy from the City's website www.bayswater.wa.gov.au/recyclingguide. New recycling bin stickers will also soon be available to collect from these locations.

The biggest change you will notice is that aerosols can no-longer be placed in your yellow-top recycling bin. While Aerosol cans are made from recyclable materials, they can pose a risk to staff and equipment during the process of collecting and separating the contents of your recycling bins.

It’s also important that your recycling is empty, clean and dry before placing it in your bin. This avoids the other recyclable items in your bin becoming contaminated, which makes it unfit for recycling and means it could end up in landfill.
