The City of Fremantle is celebrating Seniors Week this week with a program of special events for over 55s.
The Wanjoo Lounge at Fremantle Oval will be open from 9am-3pm all this week for seniors to come in, meet new friends and enjoy a cuppa with morning tea.
On Wednesday the Memory Café at Bistro 21 in South Fremantle will be open from 10-11am to give people the chance to meet others living with dementia and those who support them.
On Thursday afternoon the Fremantle PCYC on Paget Street in Hilton will be hosting Walyalup Kannajil – a celebration of Nyoongar songs and stories and an afternoon tea with a taste of Aboriginal tucker.
The week’s activities will conclude with Dance Hall Days at the Fremantle Italian Club, with dance lessons from 2-3pm and live music from 3-5pm.
All events are free and no bookings are tickets are necessary.
The City of Fremantle has also been nominated as an Age Friendly Local Government finalist in the 2018 WA Seniors Awards.
The City is recognised by the World Health Organisation and is a member of the Global Network for Age Friendly Cities and Communities.
It runs a broad range of programs, including recreational, wellbeing and learning opportunities, to maintain and increase social participation of older people.
The WA Seniors Awards will be presented by the Council on the Ageing (WA) in partnership with the state government at the close of Seniors Week on Saturday.
The City of Fremantle is also seeking community feedback to assist with the preparation of a new Age Friendly City Plan.
Seniors, service providers and carers can give their views at any of the Seniors Week events and also through an online survey on the My Say Freo website.
The feedback will be presented to the Age Friendly City Plan working group - consisting of the mayor, elected members, service providers and community representatives.
