Call for new artwork in CBCity

Local senior high school students are being invited to submit designs for a large vertical image, to be installed as part of the $5.2 million upgrading of the Canterbury Town Centre.
Mayor Khal Asfour said the artwork will be installed, using flatbed printed ceramic tiles, on the eastern wall of pedestrian steps, to be constructed in Robert Street.
“Students should create artwork that reflects the local life, experience or identity of the area,” he said.
“Through their artwork, students should explore their experiences, observations or memories; what they know and love about Canterbury; and what things they identify with the area.
“The successful design will be one that will engerises the site with something that is unique, engaging and fun.”
Students can enter individually, or as a group, and the successful student(s) will be paid a total of $2,000 for their artwork.
The winning design will be the latest in a number of new and exciting public artwork, including the three murals currently being installed on the back of properties along Dale Parade, Bankstown, opposite Bankstown Arts Centre.
Local artist Christina Huynh, who is painting two of the three murals, said she hopes they will instill a sense of pride and joy in the local community.
“The first mural was inspired by a local florist,” she said.
“I’ve focused exclusively on local flora and fauna, so it’s got lots of lovely, natural elements to it.
“The second mural was inspired by the small golden coy fish trail, which leads from the Arts Centre to Bankstown Station. I had walked the path countless times and never noticed the trail which, when I finally saw it, seemed insane to me!
“That mural looks at the small things in life that tend to go unnoticed when we’re on autopilot, in our everyday routines. More often than not, it’s the beautiful things in life that slip under the radar.”
