Some 10,000 teenagers are starting to pack their bags and start the journey to Byron Bay to celebrate Schoolies 2018.
As ‘reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmatic lessons become a distant memory, teenagers are being urged to focus on Respect and Responsibility.
Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, said he hoped the this year’s Schoolies would have fond memories of their stay in Byron.
“Finishing high school is a pivotal moment in a young person’s life and I still remember the elation when I was their age,” Mayor Richardson said.
“I hope everyone who comes to Byron has an amazing time and my message to the Schoolies is to make sure they party responsibly, be careful and importantly – to look after their friends.
“It’s all about respect and responsibility – respect for yourself, your friends and others, and our town, residents and businesses as well,” he said.
A ‘Schoolies Hub’’ will again be set up at Apex Park and this will be run by local resident Niqui Yazdi and band of volunteers.
The Hub is a free service where teenagers can drop in, have a break and take some time out, grab something to eat, or talk to a caring person.
“Niqui does an amazing job coordinating the hub with her team of volunteers,” Mayor Richardson said.
The Red Frogs volunteers will also be in Apex Park, offering support and wisdom to Schoolies who may be tired, emotional, or simply struggling with the pressure of prolonged partying.
First Aid officers will be on hand to help with minor ailments and there will be an increased Police presence to cope with the extra visitors in town.
“This is such an exciting time for these young people and to coin an old adage – the world is their oyster,” Mayor Richardson said.
“Their future is whatever they want to make it and I hope they leave Byron Shire with great memories,” Mayor Richardson said.
