Help those who need it this Christmas

Cessnock locals are being encouraged to give generously to this year’s Cessnock City Council Christmas Gift and Food Appeal that starts on Monday 26 November.

This year all donations will go to the Samaritans Information and Neighbourhood Centre (Cessnock).

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent is encouraging residents to support the appeal that will provide much needed assistance to those doing it tough this festive season. “All donations we receive will go to local families and those more vulnerable people in our community that need extra support. This year we are accepting toys and non-perishable food items.”

Peter Woolven from Samaritans Information and Neighbourhood Centre (Cessnock) said the donations were essential in providing assistance to local families in need.

“In 2017 we were able to support 42 families and 123 children from the Cessnock Local Government Area. Each year, requests for support are increasing for Christmas gifts and non-perishable food items.”

“Christmas is sometimes a sad and challenging time for people. With the continued support of the community, Samaritans will go the extra mile to ensure that those who are lonely, isolated or experiencing disadvantage are included in the joy,” Peter said.

Council hopes the community will show their support and give generously to the appeal.

Donations will be accepted up until Thursday 13 December. Donation drop off points include Council’s administration building under the Christmas tree. This will be erected in the first week of December, any donations before this time can be put into a donation box located in the administration building. Residents can also make donations at the Cessnock and Kurri Kurri libraries. For health and safety reasons, please ensure all donations are new and unwrapped.
