Western Downs primary school students involved in International Big Draw

Students from 15 Western Downs primary schools have taken part in an international festival with hundreds of art pieces decorated to represent their region.

As part of the International Big Draw, primary school students were asked to create their own artwork representing their communities.

The Big Draw is the world’s biggest drawing festival and promotes visual literacy and the universal language of drawing as a tool for learning, expression and invention.

For eight schools in the Dalby region, pieces of art were drawn on large puzzle pieces and allowed students to express how they felt about the region.

The puzzle pieces have been connected to create a giant puzzle which is called the Wall of Belonging which represents what it means to be a resident of the Western Downs through the eyes of some of its youngest members.

Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said the students in the region have benefited from being part of the international festival.

“Students love being able to show-off their creative side and an event such as the Big Draw has allowed our students to create some wonderful pieces of art,” she said.

“We wanted the students to express why they love living in the Western Downs.”

Principal of Dalby State School Mona Anau said her students loved being part of the international festival.

“When our school was invited to create these pieces of art our kids couldn’t wait to get started,” she said.

“The drawings look fantastic and tell a story of how much our kids love their community.

“The final product is something to see and really is a great initiative.”

Students from Dalby State School, Dalby South State School, Bell State School, Brigalow State School, Jandowae State School, Jimbour State School, Kaimkillenbun State School and Kogan State School contributed to the artwork.

The Wall of Belonging will be on display at Gallery 107 @ Dalby.
