This week is Australian Food Safety Week and theme for 2018 is ‘Food poisoning – take it seriously’. This comes as timely reminder when Bayside Council was recently successful in prosecuting a local business for operating an unclean food premises.
Council’s Environmental Health Officers issued a Food Act order with 102 cleanliness (including pest infestation and build-up of dirt and grime), structural and operational breaches, including the seizure of 110kg of contaminated food. The defendant was convicted of nine breaches and fined a total of $18,000 with $6,000 in costs awarded to Council.
Council’s Environmental Health Unit provides services designed to maintain and improve the public and environmental health, safety and wellbeing of the community.
Some of the responsibilities of Environmental Health Officers include:
conducting annual food safety inspections of food premises testing the health and safety of public pools and spas enforcing tobacco reforms such as smoke free dining in local restaurants and cafes and cigarette sales providing information about asbestos, household pests and re-use of grey water.This week Council is encouraging residents to look at the Food Safety Information Council’s tips for preventing listeria – a potentially life-threatening illness.
