Campbelltown Council will mark International Day of People with a Disability on December 3 by launching a Master Locksmith Access Key program.
The program is designed to make it easier for people with disability to access public toilets and other facilities 24 hours a day using Master Locksmith Access Keys (MLAK).
Council will provide them to local residents with a disability at a cost of $18.
The keys are usually only available through a Master Locksmith after presenting a letter from a doctor, community health centre or disability organisation.
Campbelltown Mayor, Cr George Brticevic, said the MLAK program was part of Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan, which aimed to promote positive attitudes towards disability inclusion, improve access to services through better systems and processes and create more liveable communities across the city.
“The MLAK system is an Australian innovation that uses a universal lock and key to allow people with disabilities to access dedicated public facilities 24 hours a day,” he said.
“The keys open facilities across Australia and provide people with a disability with the fundamental human right of access to clean, functioning public facilities at any time they need them.
“I am very pleased that Council is now able to supply these keys to our residents who have a disability.
“People can order the keys online or from the Council Civic Centre, which will provide a convenient way for them to obtain them.”
