The most common recycling mistake made by Australians is to throw soft plastics like bread bags, cereal box liners and plastic bags into their kerbside recycling bin.

These soft plastics can get caught up in the sorting machines and other recycling contained in them also ends up in landfill.

Freja and Chanelle, both aged 5 from Manly Community Preschool (pictured) make sure their morning tea wrappers don’t end up in landfill by using the preschool’s Redcycle bin.

Manly Community Preschool separates their soft plastics and drops them off at the local supermarket using the Redcycle program. The pre-schoolers learn an important lesson about recycling and know that their soft plastics will be turned into street furniture and playground equipment, thanks to their efforts.

Another important lesson the pre-schoolers learn is that the best thing you can do for the environment is to avoid and reduce waste in the first place. Manly Community Preschool even has their own worm farm where children can watch their food waste turn into compost which they can use in their garden.
