Fun Palaces delight Western Downs students

The Fun Palaces 2018 series has been hailed a success after registering huge numbers this year.
More than 2000 people attended the series held at four Western Downs Libraries.
The three-hour events provided a wide range of activities for kids from immersive experiences like virtually reality to the more physical challenging Parkour workshops.
Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said Fun Palaces was enjoyed by all who attended.
“To have more than 2000 people come to an event which is focused on exciting kids about science, technology, engineering and maths is just fantastic,” she said.
“This event was organised to give young people in our region the opportunity to try a variety of fun activities both inside the libraries and outdoors.
“Fun Palaces showcases that there are loads of wonderful opportunities and community groups that exist right on our own doorstep so you need never leave the region.”
A survey conducted during the event found the virtual-reality bike ride was the most popular activity at this year’s events.
The Parkour workshops were well attended as kids found new ways to scale the obstacle courses.
Cr Maguire said the events could not have been as successful without the help from community groups, volunteers and Future Makers, which is a partnership between the Queensland Museum Network and Shell’s QGC project.
“We have some amazing people in our communities who give up their time to make sure our residents have the best events,” she said.
“More than 30 community groups, businesses and organisations provided activities and volunteers across the region.
“Many more who weren’t part of a group but just wanted to help out did so as well and a huge thank you goes out to them for their selflessness.”
Participation was high at all four events with 1000 people attending at Dalby, 650 at Chinchilla, 220 at Jandowae and 160 at Miles.
