Bestselling author Rosalie Ham to speak at Council libraries

Published on 05 November 2018

Sunraysia residents will be able to hear first-hand accounts of what goes into writing a bestselling book when Australian author Rosalie Ham visits the region this week.

Rosalie is the author behind the sensational best-seller The Dressmaker, which was transformed into a big-screen hit starring Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth, Judy Davis and Hugo Weaving.

She’s written a total of four novels, the most recent of which, The Year of the Farmer, was released in September this year to rave reviews.

It’s been described by The Saturday Paper as “a tightly plotted, highly entertaining romp that poses some big questions”, while The Lesser Column labelled it “a quiet and stunning achievement”.

Rosalie will appear at Council’s Merbein, Red Cliffs, Mildura and Ouyen Libraries at the following dates and times:

Wednesday 7 November

Merbein Library 11am

Red Cliffs Library 2pm

Mildura Library 7pm

Thursday 8 November

Ouyen Library 11am

Mildura Library 2pm

Councillor for Arts and Culture Jason Modica said Rosalie’s visit was a rare opportunity to find out what inspires a bestselling literary piece of work, as well as a chance for Sunraysia writers to gain a better understanding of the processes and work that go into writing a novel.

“Rosalie’s work speaks for itself, with rave reviews for her writing, and having her book picked up as the basis for a successful adaptation to film,” Cr Modica said.

“To be able to sit down with her, maybe get a photo, and just listen to how she’s built up her career, and how she goes about her writing, is a great opportunity, and one I’d urge local book-lovers not to miss.”

Rosalie was born and raised in Jerilderie, New South Wales, where her family still farms. She now lives in Melbourne and holds a Master of Arts in Creative Writing, and teaches literature.
