With Ararat Rural City Council offering a subsidised fee, there has never been a better time to have a kitten join the family.
Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Peter Beales said by subsidising animal adoption from the pound, it makes adoption of Ararat’s animals more attractive.
A subsidised fee of $50 is charged to new owners to obtain the cat/kitten, which has undergone the necessary veterinary procedures.
Cr Beales said this is a reasonable, affordable, and most importantly a balance between giving an animal for nothing and the animal being unaffordable due to vet costs.
“The biggest impediment to adoption is the cost,” he said.
“Members of the public have attended the pound and been considering adoption, and then when the fees are explained, they decide not to complete the adoption.
“Since Council introduced the subsidised fee, more people have offered dogs and cats a second chance by adopting from the Ararat Pound.”
Residents looking to adopt are able to choose the colour and sex of the kittens available.
