16 Days of Activism

Council is joining the global campaign to help prevent violence against women, 25 November – 10 December.

Gender-based violence is an urgent public health, human rights and social justice issue.

This year, cafes in Bayside will take part in the 16 Days Campaign to raise awareness about violence against women, specifically focusing on actions individuals can take to call out disrespect when they see it.

To spread the message local cafes will use recyclable takeaway coffee cups, displaying stickers and posters that feature messages of support to help create safe, equal and respectful relationships in Bayside.

Cafes play an important role in the community of bringing people together and we hope that by visiting one of the 40 participating cafes in Bayside we can start a very important discussion around why we need to challenge disrespect towards women and how it links to gender-based violence.

As part of the campaign, Council is encouraging people in Bayside to share their story of a time they have challenged the drivers of family violence via a pop-up video booth, known as a StoryPod.

The StoryPod will be based at Brighton Library, Friday 23 November and Saturday 24 November 10am - 4pm, and involves participants selecting a question to respond to on camera with the help of a qualified facilitator and support person.

The footage will be collected to produce an inspiring story that will be sent out through social media.
