Advantage Wollongong will host the event “Celebrating Wollongong: A city transformed”, to showcase the city’s achievements and diversifying economy at New South Wales Parliament House on Tuesday 20 November 2018.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery AM said: “The transformation of Wollongong’s economy and how it has become a magnet for talent and new economy businesses will be the key focus for the event.”
Advantage Wollongong, a partnership between the Department of Premier and Cabinet, the University of Wollongong and Council promotes Wollongong and attracts new investment and jobs to the region.
Cr Bradbery will be joined at the event by Gareth Ward MP, Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast, and Professor Paul Wellings CBE, Vice-Chancellor University of Wollongong. It is expected the event will be attended by a range of NSW MPs, investors and business representatives.
“Wollongong is a city on the rise, with a world-class university, highly skilled workforce and a growing hub of businesses with global reach,” Cr Bradbery said. “This event will show that we are open for business and are keen to promote the opportunities that Wollongong and our region have to offer as a great place to live, work, play and learn.”
For example, the Knowledge Services sector, which includes the business, finance and shared services sectors, employs over 5,000 people in the Wollongong CBD.
A recent study commissioned by Advantage Wollongong highlighted Wollongong’s competitive advantages, including that staff turnover in this sector is half that of the national average.
Lower recruitment and training costs and high staff productivity show a cost advantage of around 30 per cent compared with CBD locations in Sydney, Melbourne and Parramatta.
The new Advantage Wollongong Investor Prospectus will also be launched at the event, which tells the story of the city’s transformation and case studies of companies that have chosen to establish in Wollongong.
