Livingstone lights up in orange in support of Zonta campaign

Over the next two weeks, three landmarks in Livingstone will light up in the colour orange in support of the annual, global campaign – ‘Zonta says NO to violence against women’.
Community Development Councillor Jan Kelly said Council’s Community Partnership Unit works alongside organisations like Zonta and Queensland Police Service to raise awareness and support women seeking assistance through the Community Centre and the Capricorn Coast Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee.
“To support Zonta’s important initiative, Emu Park’s iconic Singing Ship, Cooee Bay’s Wreck Point Scenic Lookout and Yeppoon’s Stage Roof will be lit up in orange from 25 November to 10 December,” Cr Kelly said.
“As 25 November marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and 10 December is Human Rights Day – these 16 days represent activism against gender-based violence.
“Council is very proud to support this important community campaign. Unfortunately, Livingstone is not immune to the issue of violence against women, and because it will never be acceptable, Council has previously facilitated its own campaign – ‘Not In Our Shire’.
“I encourage our community to show your support by wearing orange on Sunday 25 November to help raise awareness and to eliminate any negative behaviour within our community.”
White Ribbon Day, also held on 25 November, supports a similar vision of respect for women, in which every woman lives in safety, free from all forms of abuse.
Deputy Mayor and White Ribbon Ambassador Nigel Hutton said the day’s purpose is to engage and empower men to make women’s safety their issue and responsibility.
“Council understands the importance of providing support to women in times of need through a number of ongoing support services at our John Street Community Centre,” Cr Hutton said.
