The City of Ballarat is throwing its support behind the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Held on Sunday 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is the United Nations’ declared day, raising awareness of one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today.
Tomorrow, Friday 23 November, is White Ribbon Day – Australia’s national day for raising awareness of men’s violence against women, and how to prevent it in our community.
As a community, we all play a vital role in standing up, speaking out, and ending all forms of violence against women.
The City of Ballarat recognises gender inequity as the key cause of gender-based violence, and since 2013, has included the prevention of violence against women and gender equity in its Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, undertaking actions with a range of partners.
In August, the City of Ballarat launched its Gender Equity Action Plan 2018-2020. As one of Ballarat’s largest employers, the City of Ballarat is working to achieve 50/50 gender equity across the organisation by 2020.
City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Samantha McIntosh says gender inequality remains a major issue, from the school playground to sporting fields and in the workplace.
“We know that gender inequality is a leading cause of violence against women and children. We must address gender inequality if we want to end violence against women.”
The Ballarat White Ribbon Committee is bringing our community together on White Ribbon Day to end men’s violence against women and children in our community by hosting the White Ribbon Ballarat Breakfast 2018 at the Ballarat Regional Soccer Facility in Pleasant Street on Friday 23 November.
Guest speakers will be Rae and Damian Panlock from Brodie's Law Foundation. Brodie's Law aims to raise awareness of the issue of workplace bullying and help to prevent it.
