Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone has asked Council at its meeting on Tuesday, 20 November, to investigate opportunities for additional kerbside pick-ups including a resident ‘call-up’ service.
“We want to keep the existing service but provide an additional opportunity for residents to arrange a pick-up service when they need it. This will help eliminate illegal waste dumping and better service our residents, providing kerbside collection at a time that suits them,” Mayor Carbone said.
The investigation is to be part of a broader review into Fairfield City’s waste services.
Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said Council wants to look at more innovative ways to collect and treat waste.
“Part of Council’s investigation and proposed improvement is to consider a resident ‘call-up’ service in addition to the existing kerbside waste collection system,” Mayor Carbone said.
“This supplementary service will provide a number of benefits including additional flexibility for residents and help us to dispose of more waste in a way that benefits our environment as well.
Council’s contract for pick up and disposal of household waste expires in 2025 and Council is looking to investigate all options for innovative waste collection and treatment for the future.
“Council will conduct comprehensive investigations and take the necessary steps to prepare for the future before a new contract,” Mayor Carbone said.
“We have the responsibility to seek and provide the best possible solution for future sustainable waste management, while keeping costs to residents as low as possible.”
“In addition to our household waste, we have the increasing challenges of recycling material, such as bottles, plastics and paper. The Container Deposit Scheme and the changes to China’s preparedness to accept recycling are all factors to consider.”
Mayor Carbone said Council has a proud record of helping residents dispose of waste and recycling in a responsible way.
“We have regular waste and recycling collection, bulky goods kerbside collections, the annual Spring Clean at Fairfield Showground, e-waste and chemical waste disposal, and the popular additional recycling collection over the Christmas period, but we want to do more,” Mayor Carbone said.
“Council will keep all options open and do everything we can to ensure that our future waste operations are for the benefit of our residents.”
