Council works toward proactive Heatwave Plan

Council is working on a revised version of the Borough of Queenscliffe Heatwave Plan, with the aim of enabling Council staff to put the plan into operation whenever substantially extreme weather is forecast, rather than only when a heatwave has been declared.

While extreme heat affects people of all ages, the higher proportion of people aged 65 years and over who live in Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale – 40.4% compared to an average of 20.2% in regional Victoria – makes the Borough of Queenscliffe community particularly vulnerable to heat-related illness.

Council anticipates that the revised Heatwave Plan will be considered at its Ordinary Meeting on Thursday 13 December 2018.

In the event of a heatwave, Council undertakes a number of actions, including contacting identified vulnerable members of the community, issuing alerts via Council’s Aged Care Services team, in local media and ratepayer newsletters, and on the Borough of Queenscliffe website, www.queenscliffe.vic.gov.au, and encouraging people to check on their neighbours.
