Siren to warn Sapphire Gemfields of disasters

People in the Sapphire Gemfields are invited to learn about an early warning system for flood and fire emergencies in the area.
Central Highlands Regional Council resolved to design an early warning siren system as part of council’s floodplain management plan and has $300,000 of capital works budget allocated to the project.
Central Highlands Regional Council Mayor Kerry Hayes said a siren system is an effective way to warn people of impending danger.
‘The system will be used by disaster management to warn in emergency situations including floods and fire,’ he said.
‘Particularly for flood emergencies, council has done a great amount of work installing rain and river height gauges and this is a means of effectively communicating imminent danger on a broad scale.
‘With tourists frequently camping in the area, peoples’ safety has been flagged as an issue.
‘The information session is a great opportunity to learn more about the system, how it works and where the sirens should be installed.’
