Charters Towers Regional Council has today adopted the minutes of its first Weir Recreation and Ski Park Reference Group meeting, held on Thursday 8 November.

The Group has been established in response to community interest about expanding the recreational use of the Weir; in particular, skiing.

“The question as to whether the Weir can be used for skiing has been on the agenda for some years, and we know there are also other current and potential users of the Weir that may have thoughts on how we can leverage this fantastic natural asset,” said Chair, Mayor Liz Schmidt.

“We received 136 responses to our recent survey on this topic, with many behind the concept for doing more with this space, though there was a lot of emphasis on ensuring any expansion is done in a sustainable way – economically, socially and environmentally.”

“It’s for this reason we are approaching this in a consultative manner. In addition to key Council staff we have included nine community members, representing various viewpoints, as well as Maritime Safety Queensland, an authority in this field.”

“This first meeting was about bringing everyone up to speed on the background work to date. The next meeting will be more about how we begin to move forward.”
