The current heatwave conditions being experienced in North Queensland is causing many deaths among local bat populations.
Due to the significant health risks to humans, residents are advised not to touch bats whether alive, dead or dying and instead call vaccinated, trained wildlife carers registered with the Department of Environment and Science on 1300 130 372.
If residents must move deceased bats, residents are advised to use the following no-touch techniques to clean up dead bats:
Use brooms, shovels or similar implementsPlace dead bats in bins or bury them without touchingFor people wanting to rescue distressed bats:
First call the trained wildlife carers on 1300 130 372Drench the bats with water and place shade over the bat without touching it – some may recoverIf you need to move a live bat, use the no-touch technique outlined aboveRemember:
