The City of Ballarat will be able to apply innovative, technology-based solutions to some of the town’s biggest urban challenges after receiving $350,000 of Smart Cities and Suburbs Program funding.

Along with the Federal Government funding, the City of Ballarat has also partnered with Federation University, who will contribute $125,000.

The City of Ballarat – which was among 32 out of 102 applications funded this round - has also provided $300,000 to take the project funding to $775,000.

The program of work will include:

 

The development of a Ballarat City Data Platform for public and private organisations to contribute data so together we proactively solve community and urban challenges facing the city. The roll-out of a citywide public network to support the Internet of Things, which is a network of physical objects – waste bins, lighting etc. For example, bin sensors would pick up fill levels to allow for optimisation of waste collection routes. A "Digital Living Lab" concept around the Lake Wendouree precinct: Lighting – the rollout of more energy efficient lighting Pedestrian and cycling monitoring ‘Smart’ Bins Usage monitoring of public infrastructure, such as BBQ’s Smart water management (for example, water quality testing and connected irrigation) Community engagement and education activities Business focused workshops on the use of the Internet of Things and data

The initiatives will be rolled out over a two-year period.
