Campbelltown City Council has installed a pool safety information display in the foyer of the Queen Street Civic Centre with information about fencing and other safety requirements for home swimming pools and spas.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said residents with pools or spas, or anyone considering installing one, needed to ensure their pool complied with laws governing their maintenance and safety.
“This is a timely reminder as we enter the warmer months for residents to make sure their swimming pool is as safe as possible,” Cr Brticevic said.
“It is a real tragedy that drowning in backyard pools continues to be one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of five,” he said.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to access the most current information and understand the swimming pool safety requirements in time for the swimming season.”
The Council display has pamphlets with information about pool barriers and gates, certificate of compliance application forms, pool safety checklists, a working pool gate, outdoor power point and new compulsory CPR chart.
Cr Brticevic said any pool capable of being filled to a depth greater than 30cm must have a compliant pool barrier around it.
“Children should always be supervised in and around water no matter what their swimming ability,” he said.
