Does Charters Towers need a military museum?  That is the question to be posed at a community meeting next Tuesday night.

Following interest from members of the community and community groups, Charters Towers Regional Council will facilitate a meeting to gauge support for this concept and to assist in the formation of a community working group if required.

Charters Towers region is steeped in military history with men and women of this community serving in conflicts from the Boer War to recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

During World War II, Charters Towers was a vital training and staging base for operations in the South Pacific and was home to both USAF and RAAF aircrews who flew missions over the Coral Sea and New Guinea.

There are collections of military memorabilia in both private and public hands but there is concern that over time, some will be lost to our community.  Having a museum that reflects our military contribution would be one way to preserve our history while also allowing locals and visitors alike to immerse themselves in our past.

The meeting will be held at the Charters Towers Excelsior Library meeting room on Tuesday 4 December 2018 from 7.30pm. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.
