Charters Towers’ first dedicated off-leash dog enclosure is now officially open. Work on the 1500 square metre area began in late July and was fully funded by the Works for Queensland Program, an initiative of the Queensland Government.

“This is a fantastic facility for our community and it’s great to see residents already using it over the past couple of months.” said Mayor Liz Schmidt.

“The official opening had been delayed as we were able to include additional equipment to complement the facility within the funding.

“The off-leash area allows dogs to exercise, socialise and play freely in a safe environment. It encourages residents to also interact, be social, be active and enjoy the outdoors.”

The off-leash dog area is fully enclosed by a 1.5 metre high galvanised fence and features dog agility equipment, water tap with dog drinking bowl, signage and seating with a table.   The enclosure is located at the southern end of Lissner Park and was chosen for its shade and convenience to Anne Street for vehicle parking.

“Lissner Park is the largest park in our region and is a great asset to our community. By installing an off-leash dog enclosure, we hope to reactivate the Park and empower the community to reclaim it.”
