Heatwaves are an ever-present risk to many Australian communities and as recent days have shown, the Charters Towers region is just as vulnerable to these heat extremes.
It is reported that heatwaves have caused more deaths in Australia than any other natural disaster. Like any other natural disaster, the impact of heatwaves on communities can be reduced by effective management and mitigation strategies.
Those most at risk are usually our most vulnerable and include the elderly, the very young, people with pre-existing medical conditions but also include those physically active particularly outdoor workers. Likewise, pets are also at considerable risk.
The best mitigation strategies are those we can undertake ourselves and here are a few simple, common sense tips to help cope. Stay hydrated, water is best. Wear light clothing and where possible stay out of the sun, particularly in the hotter part of the day. If you need to be outdoors, be sun smart.
Stay cool by using air-conditioning at home or in public spaces such as the library. The added home electricity cost is a small price to pay in these circumstances.
Be a good neighbour and ensure that those near you are safe, particularly those who are aged or unwell. It is best to check on their wellbeing personally at least twice daily where possible. If anyone is suffering the effects of heat, seek medical help immediately.
Finally look after your pets by ensuring they have ample cool water and suitable shelter.
