Construction is set to begin shortly on Yarra Ranges’ Civic Centre Redevelopment, following Council’s decision to award the project tender at this week’s Council meeting.
Johns Lyng Commercial Builders has been appointed to construct the new building, which is expected to be completed over a two year period at a cost of around $26.1 million (exc GST).
Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson said this was an exciting milestone, and looked forward to construction beginning in the new year.
“Council’s building redevelopment will better accommodate the needs of the community and council employees, with the construction and refurbishment of office space and the creation of new public space that will be available for Council and community use,” Cr Stevenson said.
“It will also address a number of building and compliance issues with the current offices, which are more than 50 years old, have poor disability access and are no longer fit-for-purpose.
“In addition to these benefits, it will equip Council to adapt to changing technology and enable us to provide effective, functional and responsive customer service well into the future.”
Cr Stevenson said the contractor had been chosen following a selective tender process. They have worked on a variety of projects, including the Pinks Reserve Regional Netball Facility.
He said the project would also provide an opportunity for someone looking to enter the construction industry.
“Johns Lyng is offering a cadetship to one lucky person, who we hope will come from within the Yarra Ranges,” Cr Stevenson said.
“The cadetship will involve in-house training and formal education, as well as hands-on experience during the course of construction for our building.”
Construction works are expected to begin in January next year, with an approximate two year build.
