Liverpool City Council is encouraging residents to comment on a draft innovation strategy designed to make Liverpool an innovation leader locally, nationally and globally.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said the Innovation Strategy would be an important guide for Council as Liverpool continues its period of rapid growth.

“Liverpool is on the tail of a comet. We have the rare opportunity to capitalise on the development occurring in all sectors, making the most of these opportunities for our community,” Mayor Waller said

“We need to continue to develop the growing innovation ‘ecosystem’ centred in our city by encouraging and supporting the big players like the universities and hospitals through to start-ups and innovators.

“We will continue to work closely with local businesses so they take advantage of the opportunities and encourage new industries to develop around Western Sydney Airport, creating new jobs for our community.

“We have to make sure our organisation builds the skills and systems to create and deliver new and better ways of responding to community needs.

The strategy includes ways Council can act as a leader in innovation, attract innovative businesses and institutions to Liverpool and how Council can collaborate with others in innovative ways.

“We already have strong collaboration in Liverpool, through the Liverpool Innovation Precinct,” Mayor Waller said.

“This precinct, formed around Liverpool Hospital and brings together leading health, education and business institutions. It is a shining example of how when we work together we are more than the sum of our parts.

“But we have to go further. We need to find the best ways to harness our unprecedented growth to the benefit of the community in a sustainable way and for this we need to open our minds to different solutions from a variety of sources.”
