Cessnock City Council is preparing to undertake works at Whitings Bridge, Quorrobolong to replace the old structure with a new concrete bridge.
The existing single lane timber bridge has deteriorated over time forcing the travel lane to be narrowed and the introduction of a 40km/hr speed limit to minimise further deterioration to the bridge. Council was successful in securing funding for this project under the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal program.
In the new year a concrete bridge will be constructed featuring two travel lanes and allow for the removal of the speed restriction. Associated works include road widening, signage and line marking.
Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent is looking forward to the project getting underway that will improve road safety.
“The new bridge will have a longer life span and lower maintenance costs than the existing structure. Most importantly it will provide a safer route of travel. Whitings Bridge is a vital link between Cessnock and the southern part of the local government area. Council is committed to undertaking works that will provide safer travel for all road users.”
“A big thank you to all the landholders who are assisting us to carry out these works.”
Preliminary site works will commence in the coming weeks and bridge replacement works will start January 2019. The bridge will be closed in early January until the end of February 2019. An alternate route will be established for light vehicles and a detour will be in place for heavy vehicles.
The bridge is expected to be reopened in February and the project completed by March 2019, subject to weather conditions.
