Council approves construction of 15th solar farm

Western Downs Regional Council has cemented its reputation as the energy capital of Australia after approving the construction of a 15th solar farm.

The proposal for a 148MW solar facility at Cameby, 12km west of Chinchilla, on the Warrego Highway was approved this month.

The 463.13ha area is currently used for grazing but it is not high-quality agricultural land making it the ideal location for solar panels.

Mayor Paul McVeigh said the approval of the region’s 15th solar farm continued Council’s push for a diverse energy sector.

“The Western Downs is committed to growing our energy sector,” he said.

“This is the second solar farm which has been approved in as many months, showing our continued commitment to renewable energy.

“We want to diversify our economy and create new jobs in our region to create a positive flow on effect for our communities.”

The applicants for the Cameby solar farm have completed informal community engagement with the land owners and residents of neighbouring properties to explain the proposal and discuss any concerns.

This announcement follows the approval for a solar farm to be built at Columboola, between Miles and Chinchilla.

The 100MW solar farm will be located on the Warrego Highway near Kerwicks Road.

Both projects are hoped to create local jobs in the Chinchilla and Miles districts, which will generate economic development in the region.
