One of the most popular mountain bike tracks in Tasmania, the North-South Track on kunanyi / Mt Wellington, will reopen this weekend after Hobart’s devastating May floods cut it in half.
A new section has been built, taking away from extensive and dangerous erosion, including a new stone bridge taking riders over the New Town Rivulet.
The new track uses local stone, some pieces weighing as much as three tonnes, to blend in with the natural landscape. It includes a number of switchbacks and ‘rock armouring’ to protect the track from wear and tear.
Hand winches, small excavator works and rocks placed individually by hand were all part of the building process.
The North-South Track is a shared use track and was first opened to the public in 2011, setting the scene for the mountain bike boom that has since hit Tasmania.
The $70,000 repair works are part of ongoing storm repairs across the City of Hobart and allow mountain bike riders to again ride all the way from The Springs to the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park.
It will take a few months for these new track works to settle in, riders are being asked to follow onsite signage.
The City of Hobart would like to thank the mountain bike community for their patience during the track repair works.
