Mayor and Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Bill Ludwig and Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga today toured The Caves and Mount Etna area to inspect the damage and to meet with the hard working firefighters, SES and residents.
Livingstone Shire Council are providing support to the Caves Community with the delivery of a diesel fuel trailer along with two 30,000 Lt water tankers to replenish water supplies at the Capricorn Caverns Resort that were depleted during yesterday’s flare-up in that area.
Following another flare-up due to adverse heat and wind conditions in the vicinity of the Cammoo Caves nearby residents were advised to prepare to leave as a precaution and some did self-evacuate.
A joint briefing between the Livingstone Local Disaster Management Group, District Disaster Coordination Centre and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Regional Operations Centre advice was held this afternoon at 4.30pm.
The updated advice at that time was that with the combined assistance of 17 ground appliances and aerial water bombing the active fires have once again been contained.
LDMG Chairman Mayor Bill Ludwig said The Caves community had been through a difficult time over the last few days dealing with a very unpredictable fire with multiple fronts.
“I would like to commend the local firefighters, SES and other volunteers for their hard work over the past few days and nights. Everyone has pulled together with a remarkable team effort to ensure everyone safe,” Mayor Ludwig said.
Residents of The Caves are currently at bushfire warning level: Advice and Council is urging the community across the shire to continue in heeding to State Warnings.
While the weekend temperatures continuing to be high, it is important for resident to consider their bushfire plan and be aware of the total fire ban currently in place.
Council will continue to monitor the situation with regular updates through Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and other emergency services on the ground. Council is urging the community to continue in heeding to State Warnings.
