Entries are now being accepted until 8 February next year for the 2019 City of Adelaide Prize – a celebration of exceptional urban design through the recognition of innovative built projects that enliven and activate the city’s public spaces.
Presented by the City of Adelaide and the SA Institute of Architects, the City of Adelaide Prize is a category within the prestigious South Australian Architecture Awards Program, run by the SA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects.
In presenting the Prize, which will be announced at an Awards Presentation in 2019, Council aims to provide leadership in the design of the public realm, highlight the role of design in creating successful public places and promote good design to the broader community.
Entries can be projects of any scale and may include buildings, public art installations, landscape works and temporary contributions to public space that actively engage the community and enhance the city’s public spaces.
Projects must be located within the City of Adelaide and have been completed in the past two years. Individual stages or components of projects as well as those undertaken by or for the City of Adelaide, State Government and/or Federal Government are also eligible.
Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor said Council was committed to further enlivening Adelaide’s public spaces, building on the city’s world-renowned reputation as a dynamic and liveable city.
“Good design, from buildings to accessible community spaces and public art, is important in creating a connected community, a city which we can all be welcome in and proud of,” said the Lord Mayor.
“The City of Adelaide Prize showcases innovative design projects that genuinely succeed in promoting activity, encourage positive community engagement and enliven our city.
“Now in its 21st year, Council is proud to continue our support of this award and to work collaboratively with the SA Institute of Architects in celebrating Adelaide’s most outstanding urban design.” The winner of the 2018 City of Adelaide Prize was 84 Halifax Street by Oxigen Landscape Architects + Urban Designers.
Oxigen’s director, James Hayter, said that Oxigen was grateful to be awarded the 2018 City of Adelaide Prize for 84 Halifax Street.
“This project is a minor architectural intervention into the city fabric but a significant one in that it contributes to the emerging mixed-use character of Halifax Street,” James said.
“We acknowledge the importance of this prize that demonstrates the City of Adelaide’s commitment to promoting and building a sustainable and liveable city with increasing community and economic benefit.”
Three commendations were awarded for the 2018 City of Adelaide Prize: The Darling Building by Williams Burton Leopardi, the Queen Adelaide Room by Swanbury Penglase and Urban Beach by Renewal SA acting on behalf of the Riverbank Authority.
The community will once again be encouraged to vote for their favourite project in the 2019 City of Adelaide Prize. The winner of the 2018 People’s Choice Award as voted by the South Australian public was The Darling Building by Williams Burton Leopardi.
