Road treatments and associated signage in Church Street, Lakes Entrance, have been made by East Gippsland Shire Council with community safety as the primary focus.
Speeding vehicles have long been an issue along Church Street, with Council receiving community petitions and complaints from the community on this matter.
“In response to community concerns, Council had a safety audit of the road undertaken that recommended a range of improvements to ensure that the cars were travelling in a safe manner through this section of Lakes Entrance,” Acting Director Operations Fiona Weigall said.
“These recommendations led to the works that were undertaken last year, including the raising of the pavement and narrowing the road in some sections.
“Since the works were complete, Council has received some further feedback from community members about confusion surrounding the white markings on the new raised pavements and if they provide pedestrians with right of way.
“Pedestrians still have to give way to cars. To make this clear, new yellow hoop signs have been installed to provide this direction to pedestrians. These signs have also been successfully used in Bairnsdale and Paynesville.”
Additional pedestrian crossing points were also installed at the intersections on Mechanics and Carpenter streets.
The next stage of road safety upgrades in Lakes Entrance will be improvements to Barkes Avenue. Consultation on these proposed changes will be undertaken in January 2019.
