Mayor Andrew Willcox has thanked the amazing work of the various emergency services during the recent bush fires across the region.

“While the Whitsundays had some outbreaks in the Cathu, Conway and Collinsville areas, our region managed to avoid the widespread damage experienced in the Mackay region.

“I applaud the preparation, planning and response by the Queensland Police Service, Rural Fire Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, SES, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, landowners, Council staff, and the Local Disaster Management Group.

“Recovery teams are now working with those affected by the fires, including Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors, Queensland Reconstruction Authority and Council staff from Whitsunday and Mackay Councils,” he said.

“As with Cyclone Debbie our Whitsunday residents and businesses were swift and generous in offering support enforcing what a tight knit community we are.”
