Snakes spotted in our parks

Several snakes have been spotted enjoying the beautiful parks and gardens around the region.

Brought out by the warm weather, snakes are generally shy and reclusive and will avoid confrontation with people.

Mayor Kerry Hayes said they are an important part of the natural environment and we can happily share our park with them if we do so sensibly.

‘If you see a snake, don’t panic. Give it a wide berth and walk pets and children away quietly.

‘Stick to the walking paths and avoid areas with thick vegetation.

Cr Hayes reminded that snakes are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

‘It is an offence to kill, injure or take snakes from the wild,’ he said.

‘After all, we have plenty of room here in the Highlands to share with all of our native wildlife.’
