New lives for old wares proves a winner

AlburyCity and Aware Programs have been recognised at this week’s Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Awards for their partnership in operating the Upcycle Shop at the Albury Waste Management Centre.

The Upcycle Shop gives new lives to second-hand goods that are sold to the public rather than being buried in landfill.

The shop stocks thousands of pre-loved ‘treasures’ that were discarded by the community. Since December 2016, the shop has diverted 200 tonnes of used goods away from landfill.

This week’s Community Waste Services Award recognises the shop’s success in delivering a significant environmental outcome.

AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said the award was a tribute to the entire community.

“Many shoppers know the Upcycle Shop offers fantastic bargains on all sorts of goods ranging from books, to bikes, to furniture and sporting goods but it’s also great to see it recognised for the significant environmental savings it makes to the community,” he said.

The award is also important recognition to Aware Industries for its work in providing employment and training to local people with a disability.

Dylan Muggivan from Aware Programs said his team was thrilled to be acknowledged at Tuesday’s awards ceremony.

“We’re really proud to not only provide a valuable service to the community but also to make a real difference in the lives of our team members - and winning this award is just icing on the cake,” he said.
