Accolades for Council at Local Government NSW Excellence in Environment Awards

Cessnock City Council has again been recognised for its achievements with two awards at the Local Government NSW Excellence in Environment Awards 2018 last week.

The awards ceremony saw Council take the stage twice, with the Cessnock Waste Management Centre (CWMC) named the overall winner for the Resource Recovery category and another award for Council’s illegal dumping campaign ‘Better not mess with Cessnock.

The design of the waste transfer station was recognised for its excellence in environmental sustainability and resource recovery.

Data examined during the first nine months of the operation of the centre indicated an increase of 690 tonnes of materials separated for resource recovery. This is an increase of 40% of materials separated by customers at the site and resulted in $280,000 annual savings in the waste levy and $400,000 in landfill space savings.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said this is a fantastic result for Council and the community.

“We are committed to minimising the amount of waste that ends up in landfill. In the last couple of years the changes we have made have achieved these results. The introduction of the Garden Organics Kerbside collection service and the opening the CWMC complement the existing kerbside recycling service. These changes are all delivering a more sustainable and environmentally responsible approach to waste management.”

The CWMC has also been recognised with the Waste Less Recycle More Waste Minimisation Award in the iconic Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2018 Sustainable Communities Awards and with a highly commended award in the Institute of Public Works Engineers Association’s Excellence Awards.

The second award recognised Council’s hard hitting illegal dumping campaign, “Better not mess with Cessnock” taking out the Behaviour Change in Waste award. This is the second time the targeted media campaign has been recognised for excellence, after receiving a highly commended at the RH Dougherty awards.

These awards are reflection of the commitment of both staff and Council towards delivering a modern and more sustainable Cessnock.
