Gladstone Regional Council together with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) will launch the annual Toad Busters season tonight, Tuesday 11 December at 6pm at Reg Tanna Park, Gladstone.
CVA will welcome all volunteers with a barbecue and team toad busting information session.
Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said residents can join local experts for informative evenings from December to March.
“This initiative allows the reduction of an introduced pest in our local parks and waterways,” Councillor Burnett said.
“Cane toads are an invasive animal that deplete our native species.
“Council would like to encourage as many volunteers as possible to turn up and participate in the humane removal of toads from our local environment.
Sessions will be held across locations in Gladstone, Tannum Sands, Agnes Water and Calliope.
“The toads will be humanly euthanised and composted at Tondoon Gardens,” Cr Burnett said.
“This year toads will also be supplied to the Discovery Coast Environmental Group in Agnes Water to use in a trial to protect turtle nests from predation from goannas.”
Participants are encouraged to wear: • Study closed in shoes • Long sleeved shirt • Long pants
Please bring: • Handheld torch / head torch • Water bottle
Full training, bags, latex gloves, safety glasses and counters will be provided. Children under 15 must have parental supervision.
