Liverpool City Councillors, led by Mayor Wendy Waller, served up a free community lunch to celebrate Christmas at Liverpool Uniting Church on 11 December.

More than 200 members of the community came to the event, including those experiencing financial and housing hardship.

“Christmas is a wonderful time of year when all members of the community can gather with their loved ones and reflect on the year that has passed,” said Mayor Waller.

“Since its establishment in 2011, Council has proudly supported the Community Christmas Lunch, which assists those who need it most at this special time of year.

“In addition to Councillors and Council staff serving a delicious barbeque to those in attendance, Council has proudly donated backpacks and hampers for disadvantaged local families.”

The Liverpool Community Kitchen and Hub is a partnership project between local community organisations, charities and churches. It was established in response to the growing needs of people in Liverpool who are experiencing social and financial disadvantage.

Free hot meals are provided to the community from Monday to Friday.

“It fills me with great pride to be part of a community that is so willing to do its bit for those in need,” said Mayor Waller.

“Events like these help to unite our community and generate positive social change.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in organising the Christmas Lunch, including the Community Kitchen and Hub staff, Uniting Church and my fellow Liverpool Councillors.”
