Council will continue to offer low rates for pet adoption in order to maintain its high rates of successful animal rehoming.
In an effort to reduce the euthanasia rates, Council implemented a 50 per cent adoption fee reduction for animals considered as difficult to rehome for the past 12 months.
The slashed rates has contributed to Council’s significant reduction in its euthanasia rates during the past two years - from 38.9 per cent for cats (2015/16) to 3.8 per cent (2017/18) and 12.9 per cent for dogs (2015/16) to 2.7 per cent (2017/18).
“Reducing the fees has had a real impact on our ability to rehome pets that are being cared for at our facility,” said Mayor George Brticevic.
“Ultimately we want to rehome all of the pets that are suitable companion animals and continue to strive for a zero euthanasia rate if at all possible,” Cr Brticevic said.
“We will continue to proactively work with the community to ensure pets are kept responsibly so that they are always healthy and safe,” he said.
At its meeting last night, Council resolved to reduce its fees for all animal adoption and offer 50 per cent discount for animals that are identified as being difficult to rehome due to age, behavioural problems or being held in the shelter for a long time.
The fees will go on public exhibition and include the proposed new cost of cats of $170 (currently $240) and $320 for dogs (currently $360). Animals considered difficult to rehome would be 50 per cent of this rate.
Council’s animal care facility is at 2 Rose Street, Campbelltown and is open 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12pm each Saturday. View our animals for sale.
