One of the largest infrastructure projects Wollongong City Council has undertaken will reach the next milestone over 22-23 December when large pre-cast concrete “Super T’s” girders are placed over the section of the bridge over the South Coast rail line.

This is the second bridge and largest in the Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive road link.

Twenty “Super-T’s” girders will be used to construct a portion of the main bridge that spans the rail line. The Super T’s are approximately 20-30 metres long and weigh between 30 and 40 tonnes each.

“Council is proud that we are able to deliver this large-scale project that will see flood reliable access for residents of the southern suburbs,’’ said Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM.

“I know the community will be very pleased to see this milestone of the girders  going in for the bridge reached just before Christmas. It’s a key moment in a long-term project for this community that will ultimately see a new four-lane 1.3 kilometre road with a shared path as well as two bridges crossing the South Coast rail line, Mullet Creek and the flood plain.”

Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast and Member for Kiama Gareth Ward said he was “delighted’’ to support the project.

“I am delighted to support the Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive project through several initiatives by the NSW Government including; $22.5 million from Restart NSW, $3.229 million interest subsidy from the Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme and a $600,000 Design Grant from the Department of Planning and Infrastructure,” Mr Ward said.

“Investing and working with Wollongong City Council the NSW Government has helped deliver this much needed infrastructure to provide continued accessibility for residents in a fast growing area of our State.

The installation of the bridge girders will take place during the rail corridor shutdown of 22 and 23 December.  Due to the extensive work required to install the girders in this limited time, the bulk of the works will take place between 5am on Saturday 22 December 2018 and 7pm Sunday 23 December 2018. Works on this stage of the project will include:

Set up and removal of a 450 and a 150 tonne crane Preparation of bridge girders prior to placement Lifting bridge girders into position Minor scaffolding works

Stage 2 construction works started in August 2018. This stage includes the bridge over the South Coast Rail Line and Mullet Creek, earthworks, roadworks, intersection upgrade and drainage works along Daisy Bank and Fairwater drives. It also includes Marshall Street deviation works.

The Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive project is anticipated to cost $93.3 million and will be completed in 2020, weather permitting. When completed, the project will include:

Four lane road and shared path including earthworks, drainage, and pavement construction 2 bridges (one over the flood channel and one over the South Coast Rail Line and Mullet Creek) Provision for future connection to Bong Bong Road Marshall Street deviation Upgrades to Princes Hwy/Fowlers Rd intersection including additional turning lanes and the signalisation of Fairwater Drives/Fowlers Road at the western end Service relocations including Power, Water and Communications Landscaping
