A new refrigerated van will enable Liverpool City Meals on Wheels to serve more district residents.
The Toyota Hi-Ace has been delivered with financial support from Liverpool City Rotary Club, and what Meals on Wheels’ Service Manager Christine Jurasz described as, “a surprise anonymous donation from a hotel.”
Meals on Wheels now delivers to more than 150 households in the Liverpool City Council area, and demand is growing.
“There is a significant increase in demand we can put down to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which is helping people under 65 with a permanent, significant disabilities,” Ms Jurasz said.
“We are grateful for the support we have received from Rotary and from Liverpool City Council over many years to help people in our community.”
The new refrigerated van will allow deliveries from Meals on Wheels’ Liverpool kitchen to other suppliers without food preparation facilities. It may also allow cuts to the prices of meals.
Rotary Club of Liverpool President Shaun Jackson said the club, established in 1949, is the oldest Rotary club in the Liverpool area.
“Our club was delighted to assisting Liverpool Meals on Wheels with a donation for its purchase of a new refrigerated vehicle. We are proud to be involved in such a worthy project,” he said.
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said Council has supported Meals on Wheels since 1964.
“For more than 50 years Meals on Wheels has been delivering high standard, reasonably priced meals to Liverpool people who might otherwise have not been able to access them,” she said.
“It’s gratifying that its new refrigerated truck will not only assist its own services, but other providers helping less-mobile people in Liverpool.”
