Queensland’s recent extreme weather shows the importance of planning ahead and being prepared for a disaster.
It’s not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ a weather event will occur in our region.
To help residents prepare for this storm season, Charters Towners Regional Council is launching its local Get Ready campaign. As part of the campaign, Council will be posting 250 ‘what’s your WHAT-IF plan?’ packs to rural property owners and will feature ‘Get Ready’ signage on its three garbage trucks.
In the new year, Council will also be installing a flood gauge system at a cost of $50,000. The gauge will provide up-to-date information on water levels along the Burdekin River and will assist Council in early detection of floods.
Funding for the flood gauge system, the ‘What-If Plan’ packs and the garbage truck signage was proudly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments through the 2017-18 Natural Disaster Resilience and Get Ready Queensland programs.
Local Disaster Coordinator and Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Aaron Johansson is urging the region to Get Ready. “Council’s campaign is a timely reminder to prepare our homes by cleaning up, prepare a fully stocked emergency kit and prepare an emergency ‘WHAT-IF’ plan.
“Now is the time to get ready. In the event a severe weather event strikes, we want the region to be well prepared,” Mr Johansson said.
